STORYTELLING EVENTS
hearth tales
I offer storytelling of the mythic, fairy and folk tale kind,
by way of public events and private bookings.
Hearth Tales are a chance to leave behind the busy doing of our lives for a
Once Upon a Time kind of time together. An opportunity to bathe in an old tale that still has medicinal nourishment for us in our modern times.
“Humans need fantasy to be human.”
~ Terry Pratchett
Why we need stories

Before the -ology was added, Psyche was a character in a story and psyche referred to soul. Long before The Enlightenment brought us the dominant modern mode of ‘intellectual understanding’, the overwhelming majority of our ancestors, without whom we would not be here, had story to keep them company in the darkness. And not just any stories, but the kind that stuck around across the passing millennia, because they spoke of common, universal truths that we all experience in one way or another during the course of a human life.
We might have different clothing on and some different words to use, but underneath that we are still made of the same blood and bone stuff; still only a step or two away from when we all lived with the wild. If that weren’t true, then why do we love the stories in which we leave the comforts of home and set out for the grand adventure we didn’t know was waiting for us and definitely aren’t sure we want, but certainly turns out to be precisely what we needed!?
Our ancestors understood themselves as existing within a grand story and that they themselves were unfolding stories; uniquely reflecting mirrors of that great and mysterious story of the Cosmos. And through time spent with story, and the Elders who carried them, our ancestors could see their own reflections in the unfolding characters and events. And with those reflections they could see themselves more clearly and know that they were not alone, but that many, many others had been down the same roads, faced the same fears and fallen into the same traps. And that, through humility, cunning, patience, courage and a lot of help from spirit, they came through the long dark night of the soul, into a state of greater wholeness within, and therefore a more joyful, loving life, with a deeper sense of belonging to the world.
I long for the time and the place where we come back together again with the stories; so that our mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing isn’t just something we try to remedy when everything feels like it’s falling apart. But instead, with the company of the really good old stories, we can sit at the feet of the ancestors wisdom and feed on what they are passing down to us. And with that nourishment we can be supported to grow towards a kind of wholeness of heart, mind and spirit that seems pretty radical in these digital and intellectually dominated times.

“Borage is a true magician. His storytelling is permeated with a palpable mystical feeling that will take you on a journey longing for more. A journey across time and space into other worlds where the predominant language is that of the heart and soul.

Stories and Me

I am truly grateful to be one of those who can say that fairy stories, folk tales, myths and legends have enchanted me since childhood. I’ll never be quite comfortable with the impression Rumplestiltskin made upon me (as it should be), whereas Sir Gawain (of Arthur’s Round Table) will always be a role model of loyalty, courage and compassion for me.
In 2020 the stories came back into my consciousness in a big way; I found them knocking on my door asking me to have the courage to tell them to others. So, as many fairy stories tell us, I heard the calling and left on a storytelling quest; to follow the golden ball wherever it might lead me.
Since then I have become particularly captivated by European Fairy Stories, especially those of the Slavic and Russian traditions, with all their archetypal symbolism, latent wisdom and guidance for a life well lived. The stories might very often be simple, whimsical and bizarre, but they can certainly re-enchant our world and offer us a depth of nourishment that so much modern media rarely achieves. And so, as a fledgling storyteller I offer myself to be claimed by a story and claimed by an audience, happy to be the one who helps each converse with the other.
Hearth Tales Hatherleigh
On the second Sunday of each month at Old Schools, Hatherleigh, from 7pm on.
I hold the space and curate the evening for tales to come and be shared. After each story we share a little of how it has touched or moved us, as a way of thanking the story and deepening our experience. Our growing gaggle of new storytellers is testament to the very special vibe we are cultivating together.
No tickets sold and no need to book, we just ask for a small donation to help cover our costs.
If you would like to share a story at Hearth Tales Hatherleigh, be it old or new, local or from another culture, then please email me at borage@hearthhold.org

Online Hearth Tales events
I offer online storytelling sessions via group video calls, in which we gather for mythic story, community connection and personal exploration, within a framework of mythopoetic and archetypal development work. That is to say that after we have heard the story we have a chance to digest how it has touched us and is moving us. We can then gently explore this together, so that we can locate ourselves within the story and the story can give us her medicine.
Upcoming and past online sessions can be found on my Events page, and I am available for public and private bookings.
To have witnessed a tale told by this narrative mystic is a true gift. Borage is still attuned to the illustrative communication with our pasts, and how important this communication is to future generations.

Story Club Groups
Story Clubs are an opportunity for small group of people to spend much more time with a particular story, in order to more fully explore the wisdom that it may have in store and the medicine it may have for waiting specifically and uniquely for you.
Once a Story Club group starts, we close the door so that the group has privacy and confidentiality and trust can build. Each Story Club group focuses on one story and runs as often and for as long as the whole group agrees to (typically three or four sessions of two hours, once very 2 – 4 weeks). Then when we reach the end, we say our goodbyes and end that group. The door then opens again for another story and a new group, potentially with some or all of the same people.
I run Story Clubs in person and online. See my Events page for the next available Story Club group or use my Contact form to discuss a potential new group that would work for you (or to ask me for more information about Story Clubs).

The Last Word goes to Terry Pratchett
The wonderful and incomparable Terry Pratchett perhaps said it best in this conversation between the characters ‘Death’ and ‘Susan’ in his book ‘The Hogfather’
[Death] “HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.”
[Susan] “With Tooth Fairies, Hogfathers.”
[Death] “YES, AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.”
[Susan] “So we can believe the big ones.”
[Death] “YES; JUSTICE, MERCY, DUTY, THAT SORT OF THING.
[Susan] “They’re not the same at all.”
[Death] “YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET YOU TRY TO ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME KIND OF IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME … SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.”
[Susan] “Yes but people have got to believe that or what’s the point?”
[Death] “YOU NEED TO BELIEVE IN THINGS THAT AREN’T TRUE. HOW ELSE CAN THEY BECOME?”
